Sigiriya History The history of Sigiriya started during the 5th century AD when King Kashyapa I (477-495 AD) selected the rock as the site for his new capital. Kashyapa, son of King Dhatusena, overthrew his father and became king, wishing to build an impenetrable fortress to secure his rule.
